Featured Wedding of the Week: Simple Kiwi Vintage

So this week, I simply did not feel like putting words down. I don't know what it is, but to me pictures speak more. As you may not know, I love New Zealand. Never been there but desperately want to. Movie Star has been obsessed with the Lord of the Rings trilogy for years and years and so I've watched them far more than I'll admit to you. What I did not expect to come from my many hours of Frodo and the ring, was my own obsessive love for the landscape. The rolling green mountains with just a smidgin of fog floating by sends my heart aflutter. So, I have been searching for a Kiwi wedding lately with the same gorgeous mountains in the backdrop. However, in my search I could not find one.  Though I did come across a simple vintage wedding (my fav!) from the northern New Zealand island of Tauranga. I think after peeking at their day, you'll see why I like it.  But I'm still looking for that special wedding.... so if you know of one or yours is one, email us!!

When a Man Loves a Woman

I love my husband. I love him to tears. This morning I woke up to a few things that I expected but reminded me of just how much this man of mine means to me.

Every V-Day, Movie Star gives me flowers and a card. Pretty standard for today, but this morning was a little different. Those roses there are from the climbing rose bushes outside our apartment building. Okay, you say. So what? Well, I'm telling you! Climbing roses are my absolute favorite and every time the Spring comes around, I get so excited to watch them reach their full bloom.

Over the past few weeks, as they have begun this transformation, I have oo'd and aw'd over the loveliness I see from my kitchen window. So waking up to a few of them lying on the dining room table said so much to me:

"I pay attention to the words you speak."

"I know you love pretty things, and desire to bring those things to you."

"I'd rather give you flowers that have meaning, than spend money on one's that don't."

"Because I took my time to choose and pluck each little rose, my time is not more valuable than your smile."

And then there's the card. Most greeting cards these days are cheesy or full of prewritten poetry. Though you can find cards which express how you're feeling, sometimes it comes across impersonal. In fact, I couldn't even find one for Movie Star this year! I had to take a blank card and make it my own. Anyway, in Movie Star's card it was the few simple words I saw in his terrible handwriting that struck my heart: "All I can guarantee is that I love you and you will always be happy no matter where we are and no matter what we are doing." He and I have been through a big hot mess the last two years and we simply can't see a way out. By him telling me this, he is saying that he will do anything and everything he can to make sure I'm happy every day.

But don't get the wrong idea about this guy. When he gets mushy he gets uncomfortable too, so he has to add something funny to it. After I told him about the Vintage Valentine's Cards I was going to write about we laughed hysterically at one of them (the very last one). So at the bottom of the card he wrote:

"P.S. Fork over your heart....." I laughed until I cried. Then I gave him a big kiss.

What a man......

Wedding Trends: Veils

Hello again! Moving back to fashion, I've decided to talk about veils. As the saying goes, the bride is the focus of the wedding, therefore, each element that comprises the beauty of the bride on her special day is important. One of the most notable accessories that the bride wears is the veil. In most recent years, the veil has gone to the wayside in place of a tiara, head wreath, headband or nothing altogether. As classic elegance reemerges though, the veil overwhelming does as well. Don't expect the see a run of the mill sheer lace sheet draped around the bride to her waist, though. Vintage is coming back in way of lace and exceptional style.

The most trending veil now is the birdcage. It's worn in 2 main styles known as the blusher and the Russian or fishnet. Taken straight out of the 1940's, the birdcage is definitive classic style. The birdcage acknowledges the tradition of the veil but has the flair only found in the first half of the 20th century. The blusher serves as a veil more than the Russian. It's covers the bride's face, but to varying lengths. It reaches usually to the nose or chin.

As more women are opting for more originality though, the Russian is used more and more. Brides are opting to wear a veil more as a hair accessory than a garment. This means shortening the length and the angle and the overall purpose of it. The Russian is worn at an angle and covers usually only the eyes, forehead or sometimes only the hair. This style is also derived from the early 1900's. The fad for a vintage yet trendy bride would most likely be to wear a Russian veil angled to cover her forehead and one eye. This trend pays homage to classic traditions while being original in doing so.

It's obvious that I do love the birdcage look, but that doesn't count me out for liking other veils as well. The main difference between remaining veils is their length, except one type, which happens to also be becoming increasingly popular. This is the Mantilla veil. What this veil boasts all others is intricate lacy design, which falls into the return of classic elegance. Mantilla veils can come in any length, but are now usually worn to the waist, or shoulders. They also come with decorations hemming the edges of the veil or covering the entire veil. It's derived from Spanish/Mexican weddings, but the intricate lace beauty is actually very elegant simplicity from another era.

Vintage is the ruling force over veil trends right now and I couldn't love it more. The trend is to look to traditions and fashion since forgotten and for new originality and a clue in on true traditions, and as I said, I couldn't love it more.

Friay's Fab Etsy Finds: Retro Roses

When I think of rose-themed jewelry, it reminds me of the accessories that I use to wear in grammar school. Those irreplaceable treasures that I would wear to bed every night. Even though they probably only cost a few dollars, they made me feel special and girlie and just plain pretty. And maybe that's why this fashion is making a comeback. The classic rose takes us Generation Yers back to a simpler time when all we had to worry about was how to work a Pogo Bal and what time Saved By The Bell came on. Whatever the draw is, I'm hooked. Its elegant playfulness allows the rose motif to work with almost any outfit. But like anything totally 80's, having a unique touch is the key to making its retro allure work. Luckily when it comes to individuality, Etsy's got you covered. Here are a few finds that will have you rocking it like its 1989.

Thursday Throwback: Valentine's Dresses

As women well know, Valentine's Day is a day for being pretty. We love to get all dolled up for our men (or maybe just ourselves). It's a day to show how much you love someone and to let them adorn you will the same love. Now, you don't have to put on a dress, a bunch of jewelry or get your hair professionally styled but..... Why Not!? It's the one day of the year you get to go out and pick up the most perfect dress you've ever seen. If vintage fashions make you excited, then these little beauties just may do the trick.

The little girl print on this Vivien of Holloway 1940's dress is only a mask dear ladies. Do not let her guise fool you, she is a foxy bombshell and she can't help but reveal it. This style is so fantastically vintage that it may be too much for some us to pull off on a random Valentine's dinner. But I'm sure that those of you who drape yourselves in this sort of attire regularly could easily get away with it. Plus, who - when you're wearing this dress - will care what century it is from?

Now this sweet petunia from ModCloth has that modest 1950's look that is simply to-die-for. It is perfect for those of you who love a vintage hint while still maintaining your classic charm. If you love the style but find it a bit to plain for you, why not add some fantastic jewelry, a simple hat or floral headband to give your look some umph! The soft pink reminds one of flushed cheeks and kissable lips. Don't think the 1950's were a time for prudes now.

The 1950's and 60's fashions were very similar in their tight waists and pleated skirts. And this floral ModCloth dress is no exception. The print is so feminine and soft that I would love to toss this on any day I just want to feel super pretty. But when wearing this for Valentine's, you just may find yourself on a day date at the park, a stroll through an arboretum, a lunch with your single gals or a night out dancing your vintage heels away.

I have never been a huge fan of many 1970's fashions, but this flowing bit of floral beauty from PinTuckStyle has my name written all over it. The 1970's were a time for pleats, long sleeves and high neck-lines (not me), but isn't there something a bit seductive about the sheer fabric just barely covering what lies beneath? It reminds me that we don't have to show it all off. Men like when we hide those private areas, while still hinting at them (it gives them something to imagine). Plus as a breeze drifts by, the fabrics softness will flutter over your skin and remind that man of just how smooth you are. The belt adds a nice touch too. Cinching in your waistline gives non-curvy women something to elude. Whoever thought at first glance this dress was seductive?

Now this dress certainly packs a punch. So I like to call the Pink "POW! ZAM! PUNCH!" Dress. Obviously, this is an 80's throwback and some of you may be thinking, "Yes, throw it back there!" But despite the florescent pink and cutesy leather bow this dress is just a strapless piece of tightness. Which will most definitely look best on those of you who have the slenderest of waists as well as a booty for days. The rest of us can just throw on some spanks and killer heels to offset our lack of a Barbie body. I may not be able to wear it, but I love it just the same!

Thursday Throwbacks: Headbands

Introducing Thursday Throwbacks! Each Thursday we'll bring you a look into the past through fashion, housewares, photographs, beauty tips and everything else vintage. Stay tuned for more retro finds and tips on how to incorporate the old with the new.

Headbands began going out of style in the mid 90's, and no one has been caught dead wearing them for over a decade. In the past year though, as retro fashion is coming back in style, headbands are coming back, but not as the thick, fluorescent or polkadot accessories from Full House or Clarissa Explains It All. Headband designs now come from an era much further back. We're talking the flappers of the 1920's and before.The two main designs that are bringing back the headband are flowers

and feathers

They're much more chic and feminine than the cheetah-striped headbands that you might remember Jessie Spano or Kelly Taylor sporting, and I believe that is because they're going for an old-fashioned feel rather than modern.

Flower headbands are meant to make the flower appear to just be placed in the hair. They're opted for over clips, because headbands stay in place much better. The bands are also now very thin to help conceal it. Headbands are coming back into style, but the band itself is meant to be barely there. The flowers themselves vary greatly as there's not only just one ruling style. They're usually worn at a tilt, a vintage trend from the 20's, 30's and 40's. Another style from the yesteryears is wear it at the front of the head rather than at the center.

Different from the originals though, are new types of designs and materials for flowers. Flappers' headbands were meant to look lavish, expensive and elegant, made from the best materials. The flowers had to look authentic for the effort put into them. Nowadays, headbands are more simple, basic and don't have to emulate a real flower exactly. A major trend it to use to fabrics, especially cloth for the flowers. It's very cute, very colorful and pays homage to the flappers' design while still creating a design all its' own.

Of course authentic-looking flowers are still made. The types of flowers mirrored are more diverse now, but the original idea remains the same. The style is quite pretty and if you want a classic cute look, it's the way to go.

The other major headband design making a comebacks is the feather. I love this one, because it hasn't been seen since the 20's. Flowers have always been prevalent in all types of fashion, but feathers have been popular only here and there. Feather headbands can only be associated with the flappers and this gorgeous throwback in making it's way back into fashion again. I love to see them becoming popular once again.

Feathers can be incorporated into designs with flowers or be the design itself. The style I think is the coolest is one large feather going across the entire head. Like the flower headband, the trick is made the band not visible and unlike the flower headband, it is never really worn at the front of the head. For a vintage and rare look, you can't go wrong with this.

Now that headbands are becoming trendy again, the designs, like everything else nowadays, are becoming numerous. Along with flowers and feathers, there are other natural elements being designed onto headbands such as starfish, seashells, butterflies, beads and many more. They're not throwbacks, but throw-back inspired. Stay tuned next week for another Thursday throwback find!
